Get fully immersed – it's the only way to truly experience the lake. Monkey Bay, just north of Manzinzi Bay, offers a host of scuba outfits that can offer this depth and scope. Here you can snorkel with colourful fish (Lake Malawi is known for its colourful cichlids – at least 700 species have been recorded).

The 30-year-old villa has been refurbished with guests in mind. Its decor is a stylish blend of rustic art, contemporary furnishings and mod cons. The lounge is spacious, with a lovely stone fireplace at its heart. The kitchen is small but adequate. There's a big veranda with sofas that overlook the lawn and its exemplary sausage tree. The lake is just a few metres away – boulders and the private beach are the only interruptions between you and the vista.
You'll find six bedrooms, each with different sleeping configurations and various amenities, but all are modernly furnished and comfortable. One room offers a king-sized bed and en-suite bathroom with shower. Another room has two single beds and an en-suite bathroom with shower. The remaining four bedrooms offer a bunk bed (ideal for two young children), two single beds, a double bed and a king-sized bed and share two bathrooms. All rooms have adequate cupboard space, mosquito nets and ceiling fan.
