This 6-day Budget Lodge Safari starts in Lilongwe, Malawi, driving you to Zambia's premier game reserve, the South Luangwa National Park.

The Luangwa Valley incorporates 9050km² of unspoiled woodland and riverine vegetation and is home to over 40 mammal and 650 bird species. On this affordable safari, you have ample opportunity to explore untamed South Luangwa Park on morning and evening game drives, conducted in open 4x4 game viewing vehicles.

After our game viewing adventure, we journey back to Lilongwe, en route to Lake Malawi. The beautiful tropical waters of Lake Malawi are ideal for snorkelling and diving, and our lodge on Nankoma Island is perfect for chilling out and exploring.

This South Luangwa National Park & Lake Malawi Safari offers a superb African wildlife and lake getaway!

Day 1: Lilongwe (Malawi) to Luangwa Valley (Zambia)

This South Luangwa Park & Lake Malawi Safari departs from Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi. We meet up at 08h30 in the morning or collect you from your pre-tour accommodation in Lilongwe, leaving the city at about 09h00. Heading to Luangwa in the tour transfer vehicle we take a picnic lunch along with us.

From Lilongwe, we travel to Mchinji, a town located near the Zambian border in an area of open grasslands and the Mchinji Hills of Malawi. Then we continue to the nearby Zambian border and on to the lively town of Chipata, a short drive into Zambia. Leaving Chipata we follow a dirt road to Luangwa Valley, making our way to our lodge near the game-rich Mfuwe area of Luangwa.

Arriving at the safari lodge in the mid-afternoon we settle into our chalets and enjoy afternoon tea and coffee. Dinner is served from 19h30 onwards at the lodge, overlooking the Luangwa River.

Day 2 & 3: South Luangwa Valley (Zambia)

Our days on safari in South Luangwa National Park start with an early morning wake up call for some tea, coffee and a light snack before we venture into the untamed bush. We aim to embark on our morning game drives in South Luangwa Park at 6:00 am, as mornings are an excellent time for game viewing.

The game drives in South Luangwa Park, Zambia's top wilderness area, are conducted in open 4x4 safari vehicles to ensure the best wildlife viewing in this unspoilt wilderness area. We take drinks and snacks along for your enjoyment in the game park.

After our morning's exploration, we make our way back to the safari lodge in time for a delicious brunch. Relax, take a swim, enjoy lunch and a rest before our afternoon-to-night game drive starting at about 16h00. South Luangwa Park is renowned for its excellent night game viewing drives, which are included in this African Safari. On night drives a powerful spotlight is used to sight nocturnal creatures roaming in the bush.

We return from our rewarding game drive in this pristine wilderness area of Zambia at around 20h00 for dinner and overnight at the lodge.

You also have the option of embarking on a full day game drive or a game walk in season at extra cost.

South Luangwa Lodge Accommodation

The Luangwa lodge that we stay in is situated on the banks of the Luangwa River and consists of en-suite chalets, each built from stone, concrete and wood.

Each of these chalets is spacious and well ventilated with a canvas roof and is designed to allow for some great views. Each room is fully kitted out and each chalet has a veranda with a view of the river and South Luangwa Park.

Day 4: Lake Malawi (Malawi)

After breakfast this morning we leave Zambia behind, travelling back to Lilongwe in Malawi. Arriving in Lilongwe we transfer to a smaller vehicle for our two-hour drive to Lake Malawi.

Reaching Lake Malawi we board a boat for the transfer to our lodge on a nearby island. The boat ride takes us on a scenic journey down the Linthipe River and out to the Marelli Island Archipelago of Lake Malawi. Our Lake Malawi lodge lies on Nankoma Island, just three kilometres from the lakeshore in Lake Malawi National Park.

We stay in comfortable tented chalets with en-suite bathrooms overlooking the lake on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis.

Day 5: Nankoma Island, Lake Malawi (Malawi)

The last full day on this Zambia and Malawi Safari is free for you to relax on Nankoma Island of Lake Malawi.

Spend the day unwinding at the lodge and enjoying a variety of activities. Go snorkelling or kayaking around the island (included in your tour price). Explore the island on foot, following the nature trail to the top of the island and birdwatching along the way. The lodge also offers exciting optional activities (at extra cost) including a boat ride around Nankoma Island to watch cormorant colonies and fish eagles. Other optional activities include scuba diving, windsurfing and wakeboarding (extra cost). Scuba diving is a popular activity at Lake Malawi which hosts over 800 species of fish and is known for its abundance of brightly-coloured Cichlid fish.

Lake Malawi Island Accommodation

The lodge on Nankoma Island is located right on the lakeshore, providing beautiful sunset views over the water. Nankoma Island is part of the Marelli Archipelago in Lake Malawi National Park which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The island boasts diverse flora and fauna, along with rich birdlife, making it a great destination for nature lovers.

The lodge features eight comfortable tented chalets in unspoilt nature, overlooking the lake. The lodge restaurant has a choice of 3 menus daily including vegetarian options. The poolside bar serves a wide variety of drinks and homemade cocktails for sundowners overlooking the lake. Lodge facilities include an infinity pool, volleyball court and several secluded lounges for relaxing and watching the spectacular sunsets over the lake. The lodge also offers a wide variety of activities for adventure seekers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Day 6: Lilongwe (Malawi)

On day six we have breakfast and say goodbye to the beautiful Lake Malawi, transferring you to Lilongwe.

We arrive in the city in time for your onward journey, bringing this affordable South Luangwa National Park & Lake Malawi Safari to a close.
